Storyline
Inspired by the perennial New York Times bestseller of the same name, WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU'RE EXPECTING is a hilarious and heartfelt big screen comedy about five couples whose intertwined lives are turned upside down by the challenges of impending parenthood. Over the moon about starting a family, TV fitness guru Jules and dance show star Evan find that their high-octane celebrity lives don't stand a chance against the surprise demands of pregnancy. Baby-crazy author and advocate Wendy gets a taste of her own militant mommy advice when pregnancy hormones ravage her body; while Wendy's husband, Gary, struggles not to be outdone by his competitive alpha-Dad, who's expecting twins with his much younger trophy wife, Skyler. Photographer Holly is prepared to travel the globe to adopt a child, but her husband Alex isn't so sure, and tries to quiet his panic by attending a "dudes" support group…

No great expectations from this pregnant pause

Rating: 4/10

It's "New Year's Eve" in the neo-natal unit; "Valentine's Day" with a
uterus; "Knocked Up" times five. Unfortunately, that's about the best I
can about this film featuring the ups and downs of having a baby.

In an attempt to jump on the multi-story, large cast bandwagon,
director Kirk Jones (the charming "Waking Ted Devine," the horrid
"Nanny McPhee") – with the assistance of writers Shauna Cross and
Heather Hach ("Freaky Friday") – give us a few sparkling comedic
moments, only to ruin it all with depressing dramatic letdowns and
cinema's most predictable conclusion.

Then again, some of the heavier scenes are actually more
(unintentionally) hilarious than the lighter ones. And while there is
nothing unusual about comedies with dramatic overtones, this movie is
all over the map, going from pure joy in some sequences to outright
horror and heartbreaking grief in the next one.

Like "Hamlet," the movie suffers from an inability to make up its mind.

With a cast featuring Elizabeth Banks ("The 40-Year Old Virgin," "Man
On a Ledge"), Cameron Diaz ("Something About Mary," "Killers"), Dennis
Quaid ("Cheaper By the Dozen," "The Express"), Jennifer Lopez ("The
Back-Up Plan"), Chris Rock ("Death At a Funeral"), Ben Falcone
("Bridesmaids"), Brooklyn Decker ("Just Go With It"), Wendi
McLendon-Covey ("Bridesmaids," "Reno: 911" TV series), Rebel Wilson
("Ghost Rider," "Bridesmaids"), Anna Kendrick ("50/50," "Scott Pilgrim
vs. the World"), Rob Huebel ("I Love You, Man") and Thomas Lennon ("Hot
Tub Time Machine"), among others, one figures the humor quotient would
rate high in this endeavor.

One would mostly be wrong.

Plot has five Atlanta couples, Evan (Matthew Morrison, "Glee" TV
series) and Jules (Diaz); Alex (Rodrigo Santoro, "Post Grad") and Holly
(Lopez); Ramsey (Quaid) and Skyler (Decker); Gary (Falcone) and Wendy
(Banks); and Marco (Chace Crawford, "Gossip Girls" TV series) and Rosie
(Kendrick), all of whom are in various stages of pregnancy and/or child
expectations.

Evan and Jules have hooked up while involved on the show, "Celebrity
Dance Factor," (she throws up on live television after the final
episode), and now constantly bicker about whether or not to circumcise
the baby boy-to-be.

Gary, who was on a fat-loss TV show and children's author Wendy are now
expecting after years of trying, but also discover that Gary's
neglectful, NASCAR driver father, Ramsey, and his young wife are going
to have twins. The sad-sack, whimpy, whining son is one-upped by the
old man – again.

Ad man Alex and professional photographer Holly are looking to adopt an
Ethiopian newborn; while Marco and Rosie, who work in competitive food
trucks, have a one-night stand. Somehow, all of these characters end up
connected with each other, no matter how far-fetched these situations
become.

And for couples having their first children, there is little chemistry
or real love exhibited herewithin. The emotional depth is as shallow as
a saucer and just as inconsequential.

Most of the yuks here are from Wendy, who wanted "the glow" of
pregnancy, but discovers the aches, pains and uncontrollable bodily
functions are paramount (her "mother-in-law," however, seems to have no
trouble, at all). A few more – rather uncomfortable – laughs are
solicited from Janice (Wilson), Wendy's idiot assistant (who honestly
gets more snickers due to her weight than her jokes, sad to say).

The movie's worst crime, though, is Alex's association with a group of
depressing new dads, including Rock, Huebel and Lennon, who meet at a
park each day and spout unwanted and unnecessary advice to him about
being a father. Few of these scenes are funny and a running gag of one
of the men's children tripping, falling and being hit in the head with
full beer cans, is simply dreadful.

A herky-jerky film which lacks a fluid, coherent story, as well as any
semblance of pacing, aborts what could have been a much better movie
and will certainly give many viewers sympathy and – most likely – labor
pains for its 110-minute running time.

An ambitious film which for the most part delivers spectacularly

Rating: 9/10

Saw this just now in a small indie cinema in Heidelberg, Germany and I
have to say, it was a romp. In my humble opinion this film manages to
be both Wes Anderson's funniest picture so far and his most
melancholic. The utter uncompromising stylishness of his other work is
also present here, perhaps even heightened, but in contrast to The Life
Aquatic (and to a certain degree The Darjeeling Limited), the emphasis
here is firmly on plot. The brave and often odd visuals never overwhelm
the story and the audience never feels like they are not quite in on
the joke, like in The Life Aquatic. The tone does tend to become a bit
erratic, especially in the last third of the film when Anderson seems
to want to pack so much into every frame that the film becomes a bit
cartoonish at times (hence the not-perfect score from me). All in all,
though, the plot is very balanced and the pacing is great. The two
young leads are superb and the brave move by Anderson to place unknown
actors front and centre pays off beautifully. The rest of the cast is
on paper even more star-studded than The Royal Tenenbaums and yet
Anderson never steers into unnecessary character development just to
accommodate his stars. A touch here and a touch there are more than
enough to paint a picture of a group of people who are eerily similar
in their dissatisfaction with their lives and yet react quite
differently to the two young lovers' dash (literally) for happiness. In
conclusion, a must-see for Anderson fans and highly recommended for
everyone else.

Two Important Don'ts: DON'T miss this movie, and DON'T believe the critics

Rating: 10/10

I agree heartily with all the reviewers here (except "disappointed")
because this is a GREAT BRITSH FILM for which the critics have not
given hardly enough credit. I am glad I didn't listen to their
"disappointment" and went to see it anyway. Sometimes it is critics
that are the disappointment! The acting was tremendous. The setting of
India was beautiful and perfect. The theatre was full and as most
people have already said here, everyone was laughing out loud. It was
like a great and funny and cleansing session at a cinema/therapist,that
just washed over you, so touching were all the emotions and insights,
so real to life ,you could not believe they were acting.

I read one newspaper critic who said the characters didn't have enough
depth. Well, no, it was a two hour movie, silly, and what you got was a
vignette of 7 real lives, each of them facing the reality of old age in
their own way.

How wonderful to have a real movie about real issues that addresses
them with humour and leaves you feeling uplifted. And how refreshing to
have a film by and for the mature and senior members of society. To me
the whole idea and effect of this movie is to fly in the face of the
Western idea we have of old age somehow being something pitiful, to be
feared, and if possible, to be glossed over, fixed up and avoided, so
you can remain as young, powerful and appealing to your very last day,
as possible. The movie opens up all these ideas to question and I am
sure left many, like me, pondering. Why are over 60's in this country
called Old Age Pensioners, when no self-respecting American would allow
that? They are "Senior" Citizens over there(note the difference). Why
don't we look after and respect our elders? Why does the extended
family work perfectly well in countries like Italy, Spain, Greece,
India, but is a rarity here? And who is responsible for ignoring or
marginalizing a whole generation of baby boomers who lived through and
oversaw one of the biggest transformations in society ever? They were
the generation that believed in a Brave New World, and many of them
still do.

A society that doesn't value the wisdom and experience of its elders is
without foundation.Young and old,"every man is a piece of the
continent, a part of the whole". Go and see this movie and think about
it. And take your family. Great stuff.

An Unstoppable Force of Awesomeness! All Hail The New King!

Rating:

I have got to tell anyone who will listen that this is one of THE best
adventure movies I've ever seen. It's almost impossible to convey how
pumped I am now that I've seen it. I purposefully avoid hyping myself
for movies because when expectations are too high, nothing seems to be
able to reach them. I usually avoid the hype train whenever possible.
That said, I was jacked to see this movie and was fully aboard the hype
train. It couldn't be helped. So, I was certainly open to intense
disappointment had this movie not been good. I'm so happy to report
just the opposite has happened.

The only word I can think of to describe this movie is AWESOME. It's
amazing work and everything I had hoped for and more. It's exceptional
entertainment for the uninitiated but it has everything a fanboy could
want to be sure. It has every little nuance of what a fanboy wants to
see. One of the MANY things I loved was the tension and flat out
conflict that arises between team members. It's not a two dimensional
"team wonderful that bands together to fight crime ho ho ho." Most
don't like each other at fist and there is so much texture to be
played. That is great because so many of these characters are larger
than life. They have egos and the big guns aren't used to working with
other people or even playing by the rules. Stark, Thor and Banner all
work "the other side of the fence" so to speak. Then there's the Widow,
Hawkeye and Captain America who are used to following orders and
playing within a command structure. They are all thrown together in a
wonderful and, best of all, believable fashion. Again, more than I ever
dreamed possible.

The entire cast really delivered. You needed more than just action
actors or stunt doubles to play all these parts. The pathos is there
but so are the timing and true deep performances. Look, I was missing
Ed Norton as much as anyone on that hype train I talked about but I'm
so happy to say that Mark Ruffalo won me over. I hope he's locked up
for the long haul because we don't need any more changes. Three was the
lucky number for movie Banners. Every other actor in Avnegers that
we've seen before is BETTER than their previous incarnation (EVERY
single one) with the possible exception of RDJ as Stark. He's great but
it's hard to top his take on the character from the original Iron Man
in an ensemble movie. I also have to fully disclose that I'm insanely
attracted to Scarlett Johansson. I thought her Widow character was
amazing but I'm definitely judging that through rose colored glasses.
The character arcs that run there course during this film will surprise
a lot of general audiences expecting nothing more than a Transformers
type popcorn scarfdown.

I honestly don't want to give away ANY of the movie with this review
because this is one film that needs every scene to be savored. Do
yourself a favor and remain unspoiled. It's how I saw the movie (apart
from what the trailers showed) and even though you're obviously reading
this review, read no others with any kind of spoilers whatsoever.
Experience the awesomeness for yourself. Avengers as a movie and as a
team on screen is an unstoppable force. I'm just going to say, Hulk &
Thor combination equals AWESOME and leave it at that. This movie
defines MUST SEE.

A playful return to form….well, almost.

Rating:

A decade away from the movie scene has given the Men In Black series a
chance at a fresher, newer perspective. Taking its cue from Shrek
Forever After, MIB 3 takes on a tired concept (time travel in this
case) if only to acknowledge the failure of its dull sequel and take us
back to a different era allowing us to view the franchise from an
unsullied angle. The result is a film that returns to its roots and
gives audiences the chance to relive much of what they first enjoyed –
a smart, sci-fi, buddy comedy that embraces everything weird and
wonderful about the unknown universe.

In his first cinematic role in nearly 4 years, Will Smith's Agent J is
the usual charming, witty wiseass we expect him to be. Still teamed up
with the laconic Agent K (wrinkly Tommy Lee Jones) he is no closer to
cracking his older partners deadpan demeanour but their relationship
issues take a back seat when a nemesis from Kay's past, Boris the
animal, turns up to exact revenge for having been imprisoned on the
moon 40 years ago. His elaborate plan takes him back in the past, to
the day he was caught, and sets ripples in the present, where K no
longer exists and a different reality results. J has to then literally
time jump (off the Empire State building no less) and fix the past for
normalcy to return in the present.

Directly Barry Sonnenfeld seems to find his groove once again with the
zany and icky shenanigans that put him on the map with the original.
Using plenty of the wide angle camera work that gave him fame as the
Coen's favourite lenser, the resulting imagery should work wonders for
those who decide to pay extra and catch the film on 3D (converted).
Boris the animal is also a return to series villains being screwball
and menacing in equal measure (remember Vincent D'Onofrio?) and Rick
Baker's excellent makeup effects are both incredible and revolting. The
big surprise is how well Josh Brolin impersonates Jones in the role of
a younger K – which should not be a surprise considering Brolin's
recent, impressive body of work as a bonafide actor, most notably in W.
So chameleon-like is his performance that you forget it's him and
actually completely believe it's just a younger version of Tommy Lee
Jones that you're seeing.

The films primary achievement and a true signal of its return to form
though are the scenes set in the past. Not only is Josh Brolin a
deadringer for Tommy Lee's K during his youth, but the hip musical
vibes of the late 60's/early 70's allow for plenty of playfulness to
ensue with a particularly hilarious segment devoted to Andy Warhol. If
that isn't enough, everything very neatly ties into another epochal
scientific moment from that time period and ends on a moment of
curiously satisfying emotionality that provides not only closure to the
film but the series as a whole. If that doesn't make you forgive all
the wrongs that the sequel did and embrace this film as one of the
years better movie franchise offerings the only thing that might work
on you is a neuralizer.

And Now The Excited Southerner Makes a Stupid Movie

Rating: 2/10

A dumb lead character in a comedy can result in a funny movie. However,
if every other character is dumb enough to be even slightly charmed by
a vulgar, drunken, slovenly 41-year-old man with an annoying voice who
looks like a washed-up Guns N Roses roadie, plausibility flies right
out the window, and so do the laughs.

"That's My Boy" has more promise in its male leads than it ultimately
delivers. After all, Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg have a lot more in
common besides initials. They're both Saturday Night Live alumni who
made names for themselves by writing original, funny songs. They also
both practically single-handedly revitalized SNL's popularity by
attracting a younger following.

You would think a movie starring both of them would showcase each of
their talents. Unfortunately, in "That's My Boy", Samberg was
restricted to a straight man role, while Sandler routinely eats scenery
with his atrocious Boston accent that sounds more Louisianan.

The film's premise does not leave much room for laughs as it is.
Sandler plays Donny, a native of Somerville, Massachusetts who, when
he's 13 years old, has a thing for older women, particularly his
teacher, Miss McGarricle (Eva Amurri Martino).

When Miss McGarricle takes too much of a liking to the young Donny,
they have sex, they get caught, and Miss McGarricle gets pregnant. She
bears a son, but gets sentenced to 30 years in prison.

In a contrived, totally unrealistic plot point that only serves as
fodder for jokes later on in the film, young Donny is ordered by the
court, who apparently had never heard of child care services, to raise
his newborn son. Even more unrealistically, Donny becomes a celebrity,
sells his life story for six figures, and blows his money away.

The second part of that scenario rubbed me the wrong way already. Do
you remember the name of the boy with whom 6th grade teacher Mary Kay
Letorneau had sex? I don't. That boy was featured in the New York
Times, but not on the cover of Teen Beat!

Anyway, Donny's son Todd (Samberg) grows up to become a successful
hedge fund manager, but only after moving away from Donny when he
turned 18 (Again, child services anyone?). Donny, on the other hand,
spends his money so irresponsibly that he ultimately owes $43,000 in
back taxes.

When he finds out about Todd's engagement to beautiful Jamie (Leighton
Meester), Donny convinces a TV talk show host to pay him $50,000 for
exclusive footage of Donny, Todd, and Todd's biological mother (still
in jail) reuniting at last. Such a contrived plot point serves as the
reason Donny shows up unannounced to Todd's wedding site days before
the wedding.

Rather than the wedding party, consisting of Jamie's family and Todd's
boss Steve Spirou (Tony Orlando), being repulsed by Donny's disheveled
hair, ratty clothes, vernacular that consists of the f-word spoken
every third sentence, and his irritating faux Boston accent, they
somehow see his charm. It's surprising, because if a guy who acted like
Donny showed up at my wedding, I would call security before he even
opened his mouth.

Naturally, because Donny is a boy who never grew up, his shenanigans
supposedly ruin Todd's plans for the perfect wedding. The usual cliché
plot points happen when Donny and Todd have a falling out the night
before the wedding, sentimental music borrowed from "Full House" reruns
play during the night scenes, and the climax happens right when the
bride and groom are taking their vows.

I should note that there's also a plot twist involving the bride that
was so out of left field that it landed in another ball park. Without
giving it away, I really wish the film hadn't gone there. That twist
made me cringe far more than it made me laugh.

Add those hackneyed wedding movie story lines to Sandler's constantly
disseminating his tired onslaught of fat jokes, penis gags, fart
noises, antics revolving around elderly people having sex, and
homophobic humor, and you've got "That's My Boy". The difference
between him doing those jokes in this movie and his last movie, "Jack
and Jill" (2011), is that here, when using an irritating voice, he
doesn't cross dress.

Don't get me wrong, though. I don't hate Adam Sandler. In fact, "Happy
Gilmore" (1996), "The Wedding Singer" (1998), and "The Waterboy" (1998)
still make me laugh both because the jokes are fresher and funnier, and
because Sandler's character in those movies had heart. Here, he plays a
buffoon so obnoxious you want to punch him in the face.

The other jokes not spoken by Sandler, but by other characters, fall
flat 9 times out of 10. New York Jets coach Rex Ryan plays Sandler's
financial adviser who happens to be a huge New England Patriots fan.
Get it? Because he's actually the Jets coach in real life? Hardy har
har!

Among the many cameos in this film, the only one that's genuinely funny
is Vanilla Ice, who plays himself. He surprisingly does such a good job
parodying his image from 20 years ago that Happy Madison Productions
should actually give him his own movie.

However, Vanilla Ice's role in the movie reflected the problem of
"That's My Boy": when Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg are in a movie
together, the funniest person should not be Vanilla Ice! Sandler really
needs to reevaluate his on-screen humor and his career. While his
movies are making money, he's gradually losing credibility.

To paraphrase an earlier, funnier Sandler movie ("Billy Madison"
(1995)), "That's My Boy" is one of the most insanely idiotic things I
have ever seen. At no point in this rambling, incoherent film was
Sandler even close to anything that could be considered funny. Everyone
in my screening room is now dumber for having seen it. I award this
movie 2 out of 10 stars, and may God have mercy on Adam Sandler's soul.

Bad casting killed this one for me…

Rating: 3/10

Well I saw huntsman the opening night, midnight showing. I went into it
expecting something amazing. It was…alright. Honestly the visuals
were really good. I enjoyed the how well Chris Hemsworth and Charlize
Theron portrayed their roles and drew me into the story. The little
girl that played Snow White at the beginning had me entranced, and
everything was going great – then she grew up.

Kristen Stewart as the female lead really ruined the whole film for me.
She was depressingly emotionless and despite everyone in the film's
world wanting to save and protect a otherwise unlikable character due
to the character's performance, left me neither identifying with nor
liking the character. I felt for the little girl at the beginning, who
was easily 5 times the actor Kristen Stewart was in this film.

Everyone I went with felt the same.

Throughout the film she is very quiet, and what lines she has aren't
memorable at all (again, no emotion). Chris Hemsworth pours his heart
out to her in one scene, and while she was asleep and ultimately it was
his kiss that woke her…she goes on, cold and emotionless – feeling
nothing for him. Very sad, as the first 10 minutes had me very excited
for the rest of the film – but then it just fell apart when she failed
time and time again to react or become a likable character.

She acts the same in the Twilight movies, as far as I understand – so
I'll continue to stay away from those as well. The rest of the movie
was a good production, though it dragged a little at parts. To avoid
the same problem in the future, I will simply abstain from anything
Kristen Stewart is in. If you want to see this, but haven't seen say -
Avengers, see that instead.

I'd wait for Redbox on this one.

User Review

Was not quite the Rock of Ages, but close

Rating: 7/10

*There are no real spoilers in this review, just some minor plot
details.

I had the privilege of being able to see this at an advance screening a
couple of months ago. Just to let you know, I have never seen the
Broadway show, so I can't compare the two.

On one hand, Tom Cruise stole the show as he always does. He plays the
role of aging rocker Stacee Jaxx, tasked with saving the Bourbon Room
from the villainous Patricia Whitmore's (Zeta-Jones) wrath. He has a
killer voice, and he shared some great chemistry with journalist
Constance Sack (Malin Akerman). I think everybody is going to love
those two together.

On the other hand, the two lovebirds Sherrie Christian (Julianne Hough)
and Drew Boley (Diego Boneta) just did not bring a lot of chemistry.
And their acting ability is so far inferior to the likes of the
Cruises, Baldwins, and the Giamattis of the world. And when they are
the leads, it kind of brings down the movie a little bit. The singing
was great, but isn't that the standard for musicals? I would've
preferred Brittany Snow be cast alongside the original Drew Constantine
Maroulis. Even though I have not seen the original play live, I've seen
numerous of his performances either live or on the computer.

Another critique I have is that the whole thing is a little too much.
This film felt a little busy to me. I almost wish someone would have
told Adam Shankman to tone it down a little because it fizzled a little
towards the end.

The musical numbers in were just incredible. As someone in the younger
generation, I don't believe I could appreciate the the 80s music as
much as the people born in the later 1950s, 1960s, and early 1970s.
But, make no mistake, every single number was executed pretty well. I
happened to like the performances more than Shankman's previous
musical, Hairspray.

It was legitimately funny. Even if you don't like Tom Cruise
personally, he kills it in every movie he's in. His scenes are the
best. I was also impressed by the performances of Alec Baldwin, Russell
Brand, and Paul Giamatti. Even singer Mary J. Blige got involved.

This is a movie that is some big time fun. It's not for everybody, as
the person sitting next to me reminded me of. But if you liked
Shankman's Hairspray, then you'll probably have a place for this one in
your heart too.

Kudos to Adam Shankman and Chris D'Arenzio (creater) for achieving what
they wanted to accomplish.

Ridley Scott forgot everything about great movies except for the craft

Rating: 3/10

I'm really sorry, but this a major disappointment.

No, I didn't expect miracles or something close to the original Alien.
I've been following Scott for 30 years – and it's clear that he has
been on the decline since Gladiator and Black Hawk Down.

I liked a few of his later movies like A Good Year – but most have been
rather flat and uninspired.

One thing I've noticed, is that he's gotten increasingly complacent
with his own "point of view" in terms of historical facts and how
things work in reality. It's like he has a complete disregard for
plausible motivations or factual information about how things work.

Case in point – there's a scene in the movie where a certain character
has to have an operation performed on her body – and it involves
slicing directly through the skin and muscle-tissue of her abdomen.
After the procedure, she's simply "stitched together" by metal clips in
like 3 seconds – and with a bit of local anesthetic, she continues to
move and jump about with some moaning. Ehm, you CAN'T have any kind of
normal movement with your muscle tissue completely severed – and there
was absolutely no healing involved. Just one of a series of ridiculous
events.

The plot is entirely juvenile and cliché stuff with "profound"
questions like who created us. For some reason, the beings who created
us also want to kill us – and it seems to involve incredibly elaborate
genetic engineering that also happened to kill most of them in their
remote "lab facility". They're CLEARLY much more powerful than we are -
and they could just bomb the hell out of us, or do it in a thousand
simpler ways. But no, they seem to want to utilize excessively
elaborate and dangerous genetic modification or infestation – that they
can't even control.

They also like to record recent events with some kind of holographic
recorder device that is unable to render clear images, only some cool
ghostly images that I bet Scott loved to play with. But they're quite
flexible in how they let you play recordings of their security
procedure – so you can access their systems without effort.

Characters are void of personality and growth, they're REALLY stupid -
and they like to freak out for no reason, and they like to stay calm
and playful when there IS a reason – like when encountering a nasty
looking cobra-worm – an alien – for the first time in history.

Among these faceless people – we have some willing to gleefully commit
suicide by ramming an alien ship, because they like their captain, and
they're required to do so because he "can't fly worth a damn" – despite
him being the primary pilot hired by a billionaire to do nothing but
fly the ship.

We have a religious scientist who concludes that she's found our
creators, based on: "It's what I choose to believe".

Then we have the very same religious scientist look at an alien "head"
they brought back – and she notices some strange growth on it. She then
spends 2 seconds thinking and concludes that this is obviously some
kind of "foreign cells" (impressive deduction, I must say) – and she
decides to stimulate the cells with electricity – just to see what
happens. No research – no caution – no nothing.

We have people who decide to open the door to their ship, seemingly
with no thought process, despite having just faced complete chaos by
extremely hostile alien forces – because one of their crew mates seems
to be lying in front of the door. This while other crew mates have just
been taken over by some kind of alien infestation.

Then we have the boyfriend of said religious scientist (a douche) who
decides that the air in an alien environment is safe to breathe because
his device tells him it is – and he immediately removes his helmet. A
classic Hollywood scientist moment, and clearly there's no need to
worry about biological contaminants in a place like that.

This movie is FULL of this kind of utterly implausible behavior and
random decisions.

It has a couple of "for effect" gore scenes – but Scott manages to
include ZERO tension along with them. As a result, they're mildly
disgusting – but they have no lasting effect whatsoever.

The "aliens" that are a part of this movie all look like plastic -
because of overly smooth and pale skin. They look like Lovecraft
creatures without a much-needed paint-job.

We have a horribly predictable, pointless and wasted twist involving
Guy Pearce and a certain other cast member.

We have an android, well-acted by Fassbender, who seems to be fully
random in his decisions and motivations. Few actions made sense in any
context – not to me anyway.

The music was overwrought and didn't fit with the mood of the film, and
it seemed like one theme being repeated endlessly. A surprise, given
Scott's usual flair for good music.

I think Lindelof is a complete and total hack – who only got the job
because he was the "yes-man" who could match Scott's ego. This is
pretty obvious in interviews – where Lindelof always manages to
publicly kiss Scott's behind.

1 Star for Fassbender's performance.

1 Star for the amazingly detailed visuals.

1 Star for how the above combine to form the excellent beginning.

Now, it's just a matter of leaning back – musing over a thousand
different people coming up with a thousand different explanations -
each being the "correct" interpretation of this deep and
thought-provoking masterpiece.

Going by the IMDb rating, I can do nothing but stay mesmerized by how
efficient it is to rely on the "Emperor's New Clothes" effect and let
hype do the rest. Stay real Scott, Lindelof and Hollywood.

Trivia:

Captain Chantel DuBois sings approximately 1 minute of "Non, je ne regrette rien" to her henchmen. This is a French song best known through its 1960 recording by Édith Piaf. Piaf dedicated her recording of the song to the French Foreign Legion (FFL), which has now become part of the FFL heritage and is sung when they are on parade. Due to the men's reaction, it is assumed that all of them serve or served in the FFL.

Out with the old and in with the new

Rating: 9/10

I watched this at the Cannes Film Festival 2012 after deciding to take
a break from all the serious art-house fare on offer. With the
exception of Ben Stiller's lead all the original supporting leads take
virtually a back seat in this third instalment. But several great new
characters are introduced namely Frances McDormand as Captain Chantel
DuBois, Bryan Cranston as Vitaly and the fabulous Martin Short as
Stefano. All there performances are stand out but wished Shorts Stefano
was featured more. Cranston as Vitaly was beautifully menacing but it
is the wacky deadly policewoman in charge of hunting down and capturing
the animals as they make their way across Europe which is the centre of
the narrative drive. Since the police team where obviously the bad guys
(DuBois only wants to capture Mike (Ben Stiller) so she can add his
head to her mounted collection of stuffed animals on her office wall)
it was ironic that I watched this in France since the police were
portrayed as bunch gung-ho obsessive freaks (DuBois crawls around on
all fours to sniff down her prey like a dog come insect). The film was
screened in 3D, initially I was apprehensive since I don't really enjoy
3D movies but this was a pleasant surprise. After a few minutes I had
completely forgotten that I was wearing the 3D glasses and
actually…in the spectacular climatic scene I was completely wowed. An
explosion of vivid movement and colour formed an intricate moving
tapestry of light and colour that was gorgeous to watch. The kids will
love it and any one young at heart enough to let themselves loose
themselves in escapist fun for a couple of hours. One of the best
"family" animation films that I've seen in years and highly
recommended. Oh I nearly forgot….Baron Cohen's (as The King) love
affair with a giant mute bear is both surreal and priceless!
